Molten Mosaic – Packing Puzzle
$49.99 Molten Mosaic is a 3Dprinted packing puzzle made up of 19 unique pieces that fit together on top of a blackandred frame. Each piece transitions from a hat shape on the top to an arrow shape on the bottom.
The design began as an attempt to create a tiling puzzle using 3D pieces that gradually morph from hat to arrow, layer by layer. Craig Kaplan provided the 2D curves that allowed Oskar van Deventer to model this transformation. During the process, Craig noted that the pieces shift position as they morph, meaning every piece ends up differentresulting in a puzzle that is surprisingly challenging to solve.
Molten Mosaic is inspired by the wellknown aperiodic tiling pattern discovered by David Smith and later mathematically proven by Joseph Samuel Myers, Craig S. Kaplan, and Chaim GoodmanStrauss.
Objective: Fit all 19 pieces into the frame. Designer: Oskar van Deventer
