As many Disney doll collectors know, the Disney Fairytale Designer Collection of 2013 created a host of scandalous activity by internet sellers. eBay and Amazon resellers gobbled opportunities away from those who truly wanted a doll from this collection for themselves or children.
Here is our story.
As doll appreciators and collectors, my daughters and I, witnessed first-hand at the Florida Mall Disney Store week after week in the great Disney Princess Designer Collection Debacle of 2011 where a man paid strangers to stand in lines at several Disney Stores, a day in advance sometimes, to acquire as many dolls as possible for his resale. While standing in line, we observed his calling other of his minions at Disney Stores in Tampa, Miami and Jacksonville to get information such as length of the queues and what cast members were revealing about the quantity and selection of princess dolls. One week, he struck up with us what seemed a friendly conversation at the time. It would later be revealed that he had filed that information about my daughters’ dolls for his future bargaining.
Due to exploitation of these dolls to collectors on internet sites such as Amazon and eBay, which activities by money-grubbing resellers resulted in a deluge of customer complaints to Disney, Disney Store decided to offer all of the final five princess dolls of the collection in their stores on one fatal day.
We were clueless as to what to expect when we arrived approximately 6:30 am Monday morning. Now, those of you who lived through this are frenetically laughing right now. The line was at least 1500 people long! This reseller was there with his “wife”, first two in line, with persons he had paid to stand in line beginning Sunday at 6:00 pm. He and his “wife” were the only two who got the final five that day. Only nine others got tickets to purchase one or two of the others. Cast members turned the rest of us away. Shame on Disney Store that day as they knew exactly the quantity yet had little concern for the 1,489 people who had spent the night in sleeping bags on the Florida Mall floor.
My daughters and I were disappointed but at least we counted ourselves lucky in not spending the night watched over by Florida mall security guards. While walking away, a college student at the end of the line stopped me stating that he was selling his Jasmine ticket for $60. Our disappointment overtook rational thinking, and we opted to purchase his raffle ticket for $60. Now we could purchase the doll for $65.00 more. Wee.
After purchasing Jasmine, reseller man approached me with his “deal.” He started by joking and asking what doll we got. I replied, “Jasmine.” He stated, “So you need Aurora, Pocahontas, Rapunzel and Tiana, right”? We said ‘yes.’ He then pulled out his mental rolodex and offered us the four we wanted to complete our collection in trade for both of my daughters’ Belle, Snow White and Ariel dolls — a total of six dolls for his four. When we politely told him we would consider it, he asked to exchange telephone numbers because he said he had more to trade if we were interested. He called later that day. But now the deal for those four dolls had changed — increased to two Belles, two Snow Whites, the two Ariel’s PLUS $800.00 cash!
Unbelievable! Suffices to say — no deal.
Well, reseller man showed up this year for the Fairytale Collection. He even recognized me and my daughters and laughed at the random selection process saying, “I liked the long lines better.”
It was the first day with issuance of the Snow White doll. Only about 20 people had showed, with the store getting 38 dolls. The cast member said at 1:00, “Well, there’s good news. You all get a doll!” This reseller’s name was called first – figures. After his immediate purchase, he found out there were dolls left over. He seized the opportunity by literally seizing passers-by in offering them $50 if they would be go in and, “Purchase this doll for me,” as he took his doll out of the bag to show.
He was able to acquire at least three additional Snow White dolls as we watched three persons he paid to buy Snow White dolls for him that day.
Though I laughingly simply mentioned it to a cashier, she became a bit hostile in stating, “There’s nothing we can do about that.”
We did not attempt further random selection days for the rest of the dolls because of this type of behavior from such a man. It is disheartening to watch the turning of dolls into a commodity, leaving true Disney doll lovers extremely disappointed then stretched to the max in a passionate purchase of their favorite at prices compounded three, four and five times their original retail in less than 24 hours of release.
After the sell out of Ariel and Eric within minutes of release October 16 at 3:00 am Eastern Time, I read comments and posts from extremely disappointed collectors. My daughters are collectors of Ariel and were shut out online of the final doll in their collection as well.
As a doll lover, I know how heart-breaking it can be to be unable, financially or otherwise, to not be able to acquire a beloved doll.
