Thank You For Being A Friend
Written By Andrew Gold
Performed by Cynthia Fee

Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down the road and back again
Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidante.

And if you throw a party
Invited everyone you ever knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
Thank you for being a friend.

TRIVIA

[TOP]

The Golden Girls is one of three TV-series to garner Emmy wins for all of its main characters. The other two are "All in the Family" (1971) and "Will & Grace" (1998). FYI Betty White and Estelle Getty are tied with seven nominations (one nod each for every season!), Beatrice Arthur with five nominations, and Rue McClanahan with four.

If you were lucky to tune into the very short-lived Susan Harris series "It Takes Two", you may recognize the Golden Girls house kitchen. It was recycled from the 1982-83 series. After the first few episodes of the Golden Girls' first season, the polka dot wallpaper was replaced with a leafy pattern to obtain a more tropical appearance.

Sophia Petrillo, Dorothy Zbornack's mother, was considerably a lot older than her daughter, but in reality, Estelle Getty is 15½ months younger than Beatrice Arthur. For Ms. Getty to transform externally for the role of the blunt Sicilian, make-up took forty-five minutes!

As the friendly foursome tackled many conflicts or problems, the show regularly took on controversial topics that were not normally or regularly highlighted on primetime tv. Some of the issues dealt with were: illegal immigration, drug addiction, safe sex, plastic surgery, fixed income, domestic violence, infidelity, euthanasia, chronic fatigue syndrome, sexual harrassment, pregnancy, and homicide. Perhaps one of the most gripping episodes was "72 Hours", where St. Olaf native Rose had to get tested for HIV after years of receiving an untested blood transfusion.

It's been said that Rue McClanahan, who played the freewilling Blanche Elizabeth Deveraux, could be found catching some zzz's in various areas on-set. On the other hand, Estelle Getty suffered from extreme stage fright every Friday night for 26 weeks during the show's taping.
