Amber and Katy with Cinderella 1994November 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of our first trip to Walt Disney World. It was a vacation for four with the Lion King package. Total cost for us that year, five days, four nights at the Caribbean Beach Resort with four park-hopper passes (two adults, two children) was $499! WOW!

Well, we had hoped to be able to celebrate this year with a revisit. Unfortunately, my daughter lost her job, I was laid off from three jobs this year and one of our family is no longer with us.

Fortunately, we have many lovely memories.

Mickey’s Toontown in Disneyland

Mickey's Toontown in Disneyland

Mickey's Toontown in DisneylandWe visited Mickey’s Toontown in Disneyland in September 2001.

The fictional backstory of that little land is:

Choosing to live away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood, Mickey Mouse moved to a Toon suburb in a hidden part of Anaheim in the 1930s, keeping in touch with his humble Midwestern roots. His friends followed suit and built their own houses nearby. When Walt Disney was looking for a location to build Disneyland, Mickey pointed him towards a large Orange grove nearby for him to build his park. When the park opened, Mickey and his friends traveled between their Toontown homes and Disneyland to meet the countless guests that visited the park. Eventually, in 1993, Mickey and his fellow Toontown residents decided to open their hometown to the public for visitors, digging a tunnel through the berm.

Oceans of Love TO Ursula

Pat Carroll aka Ursula with Amber, Katy and me
Share

Pat Carroll aka Ursula at Mayhem 2013It was another day that staying in a terrible house owned by a terrible landlord could not be tolerated. Despite not having the money to entertain even the notion of going to this affair, we embarked on our way to Mayhem, an event akin to Spooky Empire in Florida. Pat Carroll, better known today as the voice of villainous Ursula in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, was appearing. I had the privilege of meeting Pat Carroll at the 1997 Disney Villains convention. She is sweet and beautifully vibrant. I told Amber and Katy, “we don’t have the money for all of us to buy admission, but would you like to go for a ride, and would you mind if I went to see her”? The best daughters replied, “Sure, mom. We don’t mind. It will be good for all of us to at least get out.”

In God’s gracious ways, when we got there this Sunday, another convention that was taking place next to Mayhem was offering “reciprocity” pricing. For the admission price of one, all THREE of us got to go!

Oceans of Love, UrsulaOn top of that, Pat Carroll was filling in for a no-show guest in the Q&A! What a treat! She is amazingly witty and inspirational. She had wonderful stories and talked about her 1980 one-woman show Gertrude Stein, Gertrude Stein, Gertrude Stein” and her upcoming memoirs. (Can’t wait to read it!) It was thrilling asking her to share a story about one of my favorite roles she portrayed, that of Prunella, the stepsister with the creaking knee in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s television production of “Cinderella.”

We then waited in a long line of fellow admirers of “Ursula”/”Prunella” to talk with her, have a dear item signed and snap our photo with her.

In her 80s, she is sharp and sweet. We had a lovely time talking with her. She signed each one of our Ursula dolls. She signs them “Oceans of Love.” Pat Carroll sure does give –Oceans of Love–. As we were walking away, we heard one of her team members exclaim, “What a nice family.”

After two years of nightmares and hardship with a man who did not appreciate and abandoned his family, and landlords who deceived, stole and tortured us, it all seemed to melt away with one beautiful day with Pat Carroll.

Oceans of Love to you, Pat Carroll.

“Thank you most kindly.”

The “starry” photograph. which I took on March 31, 2013, reminded me of the old jazz song, “The Stars Fell on Alabama.” It was like the heavens shining on Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, twin sons of Ricky Nelson, grandsons of famed orchestra leader and television star Ozzie Nelson, as they perform at the Walt Disney World Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival at the American Gardens Theater. A Grand Gingerbread House at Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian Hotel

Gingerbread House at the Grand Floridian, Walt Disney World

Disney Grand Floridian Gingerbread House at Christmas Time 2008We love visiting the Grand Floridian Gingerbread House at Christmas time at the Walt Disney World resort.

The air even smells like Christmas, with that hint of ginger and yuletide cheer!

This fairy tale house is a 16-foot structure, built with 60 sheets of plywood and 1,000 board feet of trim. It is then covered with gingerbread and frosting to celebrate the holiday season. Cast members spend more than 400 hours baking over 10,000 pieces of gingerbread. At the one side of the house is a gift shop, where gingerbread men cookies and other sweets and more are available for purchase.Recipe for the Gingerbread House at Disney's Grand Floridian Hotel

The recipe for this sweet house consists of 1,050 pounds of honey, 140 pints of egg whites, 600 pounds of powdered sugar, 700 pounds of chocolate, 800 pounds of flour, 35 pounds of spices, tons of magic, a tincture of Disney Magic and a sprinkle of Pixie Dust!

In recent years, imaginative chefs included a chimney that released puffs of “cinnamon smoke” every few minutes.

Practically Perfect Tea Party with Mary Poppins at Disneyland

Jolly Holiday at Practically Perfect Tea Party with Mary Poppins

It was a Practically Perfect Tea Party at Disneyland’s Paradise Pier Hotel in September 2001!

Amber loved dressing up with hats and boas! Though Katy wasn’t fond of tea, it was no problem for the waitstaff to bring her a soda — even if it wasn’t quite cricket, ol’ chap.

Mary Poppins, of course, was Practically Perfect in every way! She came in briskly, sang songs and had a lovely tea with everyone.

Dinner with the Mouseketeers

Cheri Gardner dines with the Mickey Mouse Club Mouseketeers Tommy, Sherri, Sharon and Bobby

August 2004, Flicks Gallery hosted a Mouseketeer Reunion. This shindig outshone anything that Disney had ever done as a Disneyana Convention! The talent and artists in attendance were vast and amazing. The food was great. I count myself blessed to be there, at one of the most fun weekends ever.

Johnnie Whitacker, "Jody Davis" of TV's Family Affair

Johnnie Whitacker, "Jody"

Growing up, I was a little too young to remember the Mickey Mouse Club, but I enjoyed it in reruns in the 1970s. Several of my favorite childhood TV personalities were also in attendance. One of the best shows ever is Family Affair, and Johnnie Whitacker, who played Jody, twin of Buffy, and Kathy Garver, sister Cissy, were there.

The Disney talent that gathered here this weekend was amazing. Original Mouseketeers Bobby Burgess, Tommy Cole, Sherri Alberoni, Sharon Baird and Karen Pendleton, were there.

Disney artist Bob Olszewski

There were the artists, including: Margaret Kerry, the live action model for Tinker Bell from the original 1950 Disney classic Peter Pan; Tony Anselmo, the voice of Donald Duck; Bill Farmer, the voice of Goofy; artist Bob Olszewski, famous for his wonderful Disney miniature figurines including the Story Time Classics.

Kathy Garver, "Cissy" of TV's Family Affair

Kathy Garver, "Cissy"

I got to spend time with Johnnie Whitacker, Kathy Garver and Margaret Kerry. And the most amazing event happened at the evening dinner. Many of the people in attendance came with friends and clubs. We came not knowing anyone there so we were sitting at a table at the back of the room alone. Well, as blessings do come, the Mouseketeers showed up, with their buffet plates in hand, with not an empty table at which to dine – except ours.

Next thing we knew, they saw our table, made their way through the maze of diners, and WE were spending our evening banquet WITH THE MOUSEKETEERS! Bobby, Tommy, Sherri and Sharon! All evening, we were privileged to hear wonderful stories about Walt, their families, weddings, Lawrence Welk, and it was as if I were dreaming.

I am thankful for this spectacular happening. I cherish that wonderful evening that I spent with some of the nicest people I have ever met. Thank You always Bobby, Tommy, Sherri and Sharon!

A Rare Visit to Club 33 in New Orleans Square, Disneyland

Audio-animatronic Vultire in Trophy Room at Club 33 Disneyland

Club 33 Entrance in DisneylandIn September 2001, I had the rare privilege of dining at Club 33! The Disneyana Convention this year was at Disneyland, and one of the adventures was a brunch at Club 33 inside Disneyland. It was one of the highlights of my Disney experiences.

A little background on Club 33 — It is a fine 5-Star restaurant not open to the public and is a location within Disneyland with an actual address, 33 Royal Street. In its inception, it had to in order to have a liquor license. Club 33 has a very limited membership. Here, its members may enjoy a gourmet meal and sample fine wines. Members are permitted to arrange for friends or associates to dine or drink, but the waiting list to become a member is long, and one cannot necessarily buy a way into the club. Famous leaders from around the world, Presidents of the United States, celebrities and leaders of business are members.

Truly an interesting story told by our Disneyland Club 33 escort  surrounds the audio-animatronic vulture perched in the Trophy Room. Originally, Walt’s humorous intention was to be able to attend to guest requests so there were hidden microphones in the chandeliers. The equipment could pick up conversations, and the staff could attend to those needs, with an actor in the back room being able to respond to guests via the audo-animatronic vulture!

The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Walt Disney WorldThe Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights takes place on the Streets of America at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. This is a season display that features millions of glittering lights synchronized to  music of the holiday season.

From the beautiful Peace on Earth display above to the serene Nativity, to the city skyline to the “Freemont” type lighting spectacle, you cannot turn 360 degrees without viewing some beautifully-lit building or whimsical display. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Walt Disney World

There are twirling carousels, toy soldiers and buildings blanketed in sheets of multi-colored lights,

On various nights, from about Thanksgiving to New Year’s, it seems to really begin to snow — through the magic of Disney park imagineers.

The original of The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights was a single family’s home annual Christmas outdoor display. Growing year after year, Jennings Osborne and his family decided to share share their magical Christmas display, and Walt Disney World offered to become the new permanent home for their wonderful holiday spectacular.

The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Walt Disney WorldWe love to go, find a place to sit and drink hot chocolate. Katy’s favorite song is, of course, Judy Garland’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, aside from the boisterous contemporary version of the Nutcracker, where the lights seem to be on fire with excitement, turning off and on to the upbeat rendition.
